Five Tips for Better Docking

Five Tips for Better Docking

The sun’s going down. You’ve spent a long, deliriously fun day on the water and are ready to wrap up and head back to shore. Just one thing left to do, of course: docking your boat.

For some seasoned boaters, it’s like second nature—a quick, precise maneuver and you’re done. Not there quite yet? Don’t worry—in today’s blog, we’re sharing five simple tips for better docking every time. Take a look!

Adjust your approach

Whether you’re coming back to the marina or your favorite waterfront café, it’s always worth taking a moment to assess your surroundings before docking. Has the wind picked up? Is the sun’s position creating a harsh glare? None of these conditions are deal-breakers to your docking, they just might warrant a more targeted approach.

Why do this every time—especially at the docking spots you use all the time? Slight changes in the weather or surroundings can change the success of your approach, so be sure to go in smart.

Keep your eyes open

While you’re skimming the scene for changes in weather and other conditions, also keep an eye on the slip itself. Avoid thwarting your approach and ensure that there’s nothing in the water (litter, mooring lines, etc.) to disrupt your docking.

Slow it down

Your Vortex is all about high speeds and big thrills on the water—but when it comes time to dock, don’t be afraid to slow it down! As the old adage goes, you should never come in faster than you’d be willing to hit the dock. Smooth, swift swings into dock may look great in the movies—but they’re not with bruising your boat! Take your time, always remaining ready to change your approach as you see fit. You’ll be just fine.

Of course, some added support never hurts. That’s where Vortex’s innovative Docking Mode comes in. This feature helps you come into dock with your throttle recalibrated for slow, easy speeds—so there’s no chance of you slipping up and coming in too fast. It’s just one of the ways we aim to help make your boating experience a confident one, from beginning to the very end.

Use a helping hand

In addition to using your Vortex’s helpful Docking Mode, use the human eyes and hands around you to guide your way. Your passengers can help keep an eye on your surroundings and let you know when you’re good to go, how much space you have left, etc.

Take your time

We mentioned slowing down your boat, but it’s also helpful to slow down your mind as you head toward the dock. The process can no doubt be a daunting one when you have other boaters in the area, lots of noise from land and the water, and other conditions distracting you. However, your fellow boaters know what you face every time you dock—so don’t worry about being too slow, or wasting anyone’s time. It’s all part of the experience… one that you’ll get even better at the more you do it.

Maybe you’re new to boating, or maybe you’re an experienced seafarer looking for ways to optimize your ride. Either way, we hope that these tips help you enjoy a better, smoother docking experience.
