5 Tips for Boarding Busy Waters

5 Tips for Boarding Busy Waters

As we cruise into summertime, your favorite waterways might be busier than usual. But don’t worry—we’ve got stress-free solutions on how to share the water!

Just read on to see our top five tips.

Early bird gets the wake

There are certain times when we just know to expect busy waters—such as long holiday weekends and exceptionally warm, sunny days that seem to beckon everyone out at once! On these days, it can be helpful to begin your trip in the early morning hours, before most boaters and boarders have had a chance to gear up.

Hitting the water early helps you avoid crowded launch lines and tight cruising—and it also helps you enjoy the smoothest water of the day, when you can custom-craft the ultimate wake with ease. Early rides are also perfect for those who want to avoid the sun’s harshest rays, though you will still want to cover up with sunscreen and shades whenever the sun’s out.

Cruise in a counterclockwise direction

When in doubt, following the flow of your fellow boaters is always a good bet—but it can also be helpful to know the basic guidelines for sharing the water. For example, did you know that a general rule of thumb (written in some places, unwritten in others) is to cruise in a counterclockwise direction? This applies to fast-paced boaters as well as those towing skiers and boarders. The purpose is to help lessen the wake’s impact on those swimming or wading closer to shore, while also helping each boater enjoy the smoothest possible ride. As you follow the rules of your local waterway, be sure to leave plenty of room for the boats and boarders in front of you.

Take advantage of Dock Mode

Dock Mode on your Vortex is perfect for carrying out key maneuvers in tight spaces, but its function—limiting engine power so that you can enjoy greater control—can be beneficial in a variety of ways off-dock, too, such as when you’re handling a tricky corner or passing through a narrow passage.

Pass safely

If you find yourself approaching a fellow boater, you should each veer right. This will help you avoid getting too close as you pass one another on the water.

Practice cruising etiquette

As always, a little cruising etiquette goes a long way! We’re all trying to enjoy the water, so take it slow next to fellow boaters in tight situations, lend a hand when it comes to tricky docking or launching maneuvers, and look out for each other. You’re well on your way to a truly thrilling day on the water, no matter how busy it may be!

We hope that these tips help you share the water for a safer, smoother ride. After all, when everyone can enjoy the sun, splash around and soak in some ride time with friends, we say that’s a summer day well spent.
