Planning the Perfect Springtime Launch

Planning the Perfect Springtime Launch

The return to springtime splashing, cruising and boarding fun is almost here—but of course, you didn’t need us to tell you that!

If you’ve been counting down the days to your first outing of the season, you’re not alone. Maybe it’s your first time out since winter arrived—or maybe your very first time since bringing home a boat of your own! Whatever your situation may be, we’ve got you covered with a few helpful tips to master that first springtime launch. Take a look.

De-winterize your ride

De-winterization, spring commissioning—whatever you call it, this is the time of year to take care of those practical steps that prepare your boat for time on the water again. Your Vortex probably hasn’t been used in a few months, so in addition to a fresh clean and rinse (and optional wax for added shine), much of the process will involve reversing things you did in fall or winter. For example, you’ll want to reintroduce water to on-board systems that you emptied and treated with antifreeze. Be sure to restock your Vortex with safety items and gear you removed before winter storage, such as life jackets, fire extinguishers and anything else you might be missing.

Prepare your sport gear, too

In addition to preparing your boat, you’ll want to get your water sports gear in order, too. Give your board a quick clean and rinse to keep it looking fresh and shiny—and while you’re at it, check for any dings, tears, missing binding bolts or anything else that may need fixing before you’re back on the water. If you plan to go tubing, you can also rinse down your tube before inflating and checking for any spots that may need to be patched. By taking some time to check out your gear, you’ll be able to enjoy your next water sports adventure in confidence!

Bundle up

We may be approaching springtime, but temperatures can still be finnicky. In addition to your boat’s safety essentials, you may want to stock some extra towels, dry clothes and blankets on board for the possibility of chilly nights.

Follow the fuel rule of thirds

Whether you’re new to the water or simply heading back after the winter, this is a tip that’s always worth remembering. The fuel rule of thirds says that you should reserve a third of fuel in your tank for the trip there (to an island, up the coast, etc.), a third for the trip back, and a third for backup.

Bring a friend (or three, or four…)

We get it—at some point, you’ll be so excited to hit the water that you might just feel like sneaking off to the lake and enjoying that first-day feeling on your own! While there’s definitely something special about solo trips, we think the best way to start your spring season is with a few friends or the whole family. Not only does this make your trip more fun—there’s nothing better than watching your loved ones enjoy the warmth and the water right along with you—but having a spotter helps with safe boarding, as well as the practical steps of launching and docking, especially if you’re new to the water.

Whether it’s your first or 101st time on the water, it always helps to brush up on tips, techniques and etiquette on the water! We hope that these tips help you cruise with confidence during the season ahead.
