Top Tips for Paddleboard Fun on Your Vortex

When it comes to water sports that are making waves, the “next big thing” might be something we’ve had all along! We’re talking, of course, about the paddleboard.

Though this board may be traditionally associated with leisurely stand-up sessions around quiet coves and creeks, we think it’s just as worthy of wake sportsters, too. Wondering how? Just read on as we share a few simple tips for enjoying paddleboard fun to the fullest this summer.

Learn balance behind a boat

Did you know that gently riding a boat’s wake on your paddleboard can be a great way to learn balance? Whether you’re just starting out with wake sports, or simply want to refine your technique, take it slow and lean into each wake and get a sense of the momentum you need to cross over or stay upright.

Just like dancing, you gain rhythm the more time you spend riding a wake—and this know-how will help you on future rides, whether you’re on a paddleboard, wakeboard or skis!

Pick the perfect paddle zone

Because paddleboarding is a slower sport than, say, wakeboarding or wakesurfing, you don’t need as much surface area to enjoy it. In fact, staying away from the open channel of your favorite lake is a good idea—avoid other boats’ traffic and stick to a smooth, easygoing pace for the ultimate ride! Think protected coves and other shoreline spots where you’re free to paddle (and tumble, from time to time) with ease.

When you “wake-paddleboard,” the objective isn’t quite the same as traditional wake sports. Because you’re using your arms to paddle in a straight line (and, thus, don’t have a rope to hold onto), you won’t be moving as fast as you would on a board or skis. Instead, the idea here is to amp up the paddleboarding fun with a gentle wake. Even small swells can enhance the fun of stand-up paddleboarding, so stay farther away from the back of your boat and paddle once it’s cleared the area. The result? A slow, gently rolling wake that simulates the sensation of paddling out on the ocean, Hawaii style.

Wear a life jacket

It’s always smart to wear a life jacket as you enjoy water sports, even though this one is a little smoother than its towed counterparts!

Remember to look around

Because you’re moving slower than you would on a wakeboard or skis, you can take your time and enjoy the view a little more. When you’re paddling in clear water, you can spot fish, vegetation and other underwater features. You can also spot obstacles and paddle away from them. Bring along a pair of polarized shades to see it all even more clearly.

Lean back

Wondering how to handle a swell on your paddleboard? The key is to lean back when a wave (or, in this case, wake) is approaching you—just lean onto your back foot slightly, letting yourself roll over the wave instead of plowing into it.

Bring lunch aboard

A fun way to fuel up and stay close to the water? Bring lunch onto your paddleboard! Nothing pairs with the view from your board quite like a delicious sandwich and some good lunch company.

Bring your four-legged friend along for the fun

One more reason why we love paddleboarding? It’s easy to bring your four-legged friend along for the ride! Have your pup hop on board with you as you navigate your way through those gentle, slow-rolling swells. It’ll be an adventure for the both of you!

We hope that these tips help you enjoy bigger and better adventures, this summer and beyond! Be sure to share your own SUP shots with us in the comments below.
