Waterskiing Santa: Inside the Beloved Phenomenon

Waterskiing Santa: Inside the Beloved Phenomenon

We might be more accustomed to seeing Santa on his sleigh—but in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, he travels by waterski!

Every year on Christmas Eve, water skiers with a knack for seasonal flair take to the Old Town Alexandria Waterfront dressed in Santa suits (as well as a few elfish outfits and other seasonal looks). Their goal? To ring in the holidays the best way they know how!

Read on to learn more about this holiday tradition, 31 years in the making.

The birth of a tradition

This whimsical tradition began all the way back in 1986—and, like many great stories, it starts with a group of friends. They had all drawn straws to determine who would have to complete the ultimate dare, a Christmas Eve waterskiing excursion in full Santa attire. Fortunately, the skier who drew the short straw repeated his display the following year, drumming up public interest and eventually leading to the popular, bustling event we know today.

The beloved event

Starting at 1 pm on Christmas Eve, spectators are invited to flock to the Old Town Alexandria Waterfront—a stretch of coast that ranges from shopping and dining spots to more natural areas—to see the Santas in action. Audiences are sure to pick out a few other familiar faces from the crowd of skiers, from the Grinch to friendly reindeer skiers and more. Following the event, the skiers themselves often take to land and greet the crowds in seasonal spirit.

If you want to be a part of the excitement next year, consider participating as a skier or USA Waterski Certified Driver—it could even be your new holiday tradition!

Old Town Alexandria, your way

Can’t make it in time for Santa? Don’t worry, Old Town Alexandria is packed, year-round, with on-the-water activities to enjoy. You are always free to cruise along the waterfront or, for a relaxing break, take a water taxi to the National Mall for a bit of historical exploring. You can also explore the Potomac River by smaller watercraft like kayak, to enjoy a serene trip past national monuments and vibrant foliage.

If you’re near Alexandria this Christmas Eve, we think this event is worth checking out. Even if you’re not in the area, you can add some seasonal flair to your holiday waterskiing adventures by throwing on a Santa Hat before you go! Have fun and enjoy a happy holiday, from our family to yours.
