But there’s more than meets the eye at this one-of-a-kind lake, which straddles the border between France and Switzerland—in fact, cruise a little closer and you’ll discover a destination that has played a vital role in everything from literary tradition to scientific discovery and, of course, water sport history. Just read on to learn more about Lake Geneva, including a few of our favorite ways to enjoy it this summer!

A monstrously good time

Lake Geneva is known for warm, sunny summers and skies almost as blue as the water below—but a stray shower doesn’t have to put a damper on your dream getaway! In fact, about 200 summers ago, an unseasonably rainy summer getaway to Lake Geneva inspired one of the most famous novels in history. We’re talking Frankenstein—author Mary Shelley wrote the mad scientist’s story on a rainy evening in the lakefront mansion Villa Diodati, as part of a ghost storytelling contest with fellow writer friends. While Lake Geneva certainly isn’t spooky, we can see how its idyllic, near-mystical landscape (marked by historical haunts like the Chateau de Chillon) lent itself to some seriously fantastic fiction.

Speed is key

Lake Geneva isn’t just important to literature lovers—in fact, in 1827, it made scientific history for serving as the first place where the speed of sound was tested in freshwater!

Where water sports reign supreme

In addition to serving as a landmark for the speed of sound, Lake Geneva is also known as being a center for speed boating, and thrilling on-the-water sports. Its glossy surface and expansive area have attracted everyone from professional boat racers to weekend rec-seekers in search of that perfect place to ride the wake. Geneva, Switzerland, which overlooks the lake, was actually the spot where the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation was formed in 1946, and wake sports (especially waterskiing) have long been enjoyed here. Of course, it’s easy to see why…

Cruising Lake Geneva

Cruising Lake Geneva is a multifaceted experience. As one of the largest lakes in Europe, it provides plenty of surface area and shoreline vistas to soak in—so you can start from the shores of a quaint cities, such as Lausanne (whose stunning architecture and water views validate the region’s reputation as the “Swiss Riviera”), or Veytaux, where you can admire the old castle from the water or land.

Of course, for boaters, the best option is water—always water. After experiencing the picturesque views close to shore, you’ll enjoy cruising out toward the lake’s open expanse for some choice water sport action. The pristine surface serves as the perfect place to tackle tricks on your board or a pair of skis, and the near-endless horizon means that you’ve got plenty of surface area to work with. Find your own slice of Swiss paradise on the water and indulge your thirst for high-octane adventure, but don’t forget to look up every once in a while and enjoy the view! The serene lake setting is surrounded by the Alps, which stand tall above the Caribbean-esque water and form a truly unforgettable experience.
